Sen. Tito Sotto proposes mandatory 14th month pay for employees

Is this really a wise move?

GMA News Online reports that Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III has filed a bill proposing a mandatory 14th-month pay for all employees in the country.

The report explained that under Senate Bill 1645, "rank-and-file employees shall be entitled to an additional midyear pay annually." It indicated that the 14th month pay should not be less than half of an employee’s total basic salary. Sotto’s bill has to be deliberated first in the committee and plenary levels before it is approved by the Senate.

Sotto said employees need the additional salary because wages in the country "have invisibly decreased due to the rise in prices of basic commodities." "We need extra earnings in the middle of the year to help in school and medical expenses. Health and education needs of the ordinary Filipino must be assisted by our government," the senator said.
