Megan Young wins first Miss World title for PH despite alleged plot to "derail" her victory
Talk about fierce competition!
The Associated Press (via Inquirer.net) reported that for the first time in the 63-year history of the Miss World beauty pageant, a candidate from the Philippine won the title. Miss Philippines Megan Young was crowned as the 2013 Miss World on Saturday, September 28 during the pageant finals in Bali, Indonesia.
According to the report, the 23-year-old actress "bested 126 beauty queens from around the world to become the first Filipina to win the coveted title in a contest broadcast to more than 180 countries worldwide." Young was perceived to be a strong contender for the crown because she managed to break into the Top Five in three preliminary contests held during the pageant. The Filipina beauty queen topped the "Top Model" competition, placed fourth in the "Multimedia Challenge" and fifth in the "Beach Beauty" contest.
To the question "Why should you be Miss World?" Young answered, "I treasure a core value of humanity and that guides people why they act the way they do. I will use this to show other people how they can understand each other ... as one, we can help society."
Young’s victory comes amid the allegation that there had been a plot to "derail" her victory. In her Rappler.com article, "Plot to derail Megan Young victory?," Joyce Burton-Titular revealed that Cory Quirino, national director for the Miss World Philippines organization, sent her this text message early Friday, September 27:
There has been a smear campaign by a negligible sector of the Ph pageant industry to destroy Megan's chances for a win in MISS WORLD. In Bali the mood and aura around Megan is positive and promising. I believe Mrs Julia Morley has explicitly answered this one relentless Anti Miss World Ph person/group to stop emailing the Miss World office as they are proud of all the candidates including Megan. My request to all our countrymen is to consider the honor the Miss World Crown will bring to the country. Lets join hands now to prove that the Bayanihan spirit is strong, alive and above all, genuine.
Burton-Titular noted: "Cory Quirino did not respond to my queries regarding the identity of the person/group or what their claims against Megan Young are. However, (I believe that) it has something to do with a story published today by a UK paper claiming that Megan Young has topless photos." It turns out the said topless photos were actually from a Rogue magazine shoot done by Young. The photos were published in the magazine’s March 2012 issue.
