Cute or crazy? Congressman proposes to his girlfriend in the middle of budget hearing

Seriously, why would you propose during a budget hearing?’s Lira Dalangin-Fernandez reports that on Friday, September 27,  as lawmakers were deliberating on the proposed 2014 General Appropriations Act (GAA) in Congress, Magdalo party-list Rep. Ashley Acedillo proposed to his girlfriend Ma. Paz Ocampo.

The report noted: "Mutineer-turned-lawmaker Acedillo, jailed five years for joining the Magdalo group’s Oakwood mutiny against military corruption, staged another plot, began his proposal by asking to be recognized by Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales." After he was given the chance to speak, Acedillo said, "Mr. Speaker, I have been in Congress for a few months, but I feel I am not able to discharge my duties properly.  Mahirap sa buhay ’pag wala kang katuwang (It’s hard not to have a partner in this life).  That’s why I am compelled to conduct this inquiry..., and I am fortunate that the subject of my inquiry is here today."

The report went on to reveal: "The House staff fetched Ocampo from the gallery and led her to Acedillo. As she passed by plenary, she received roses from congressmen who lined up to greet her. When they got close to each other, Acedillo popped the question: ’Can you please do me the honor . . . please be my wife. Please put it on record.’ Then, announcing Ocampo’s response, Acedillo said to the plenary, ’Yes daw.’" After this, the newly engaged couple "went up the rostrum to pose for a photo with Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., who was then presiding."
