Freddie Aguilar’s romance with a 16-year-old girl doesn’t violate any law, says Gabriela party-list representative
It’s a private affair after all.
Charisse Luci of the Manila Bulletin reports that Gabriela party-list Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan sees nothing wrong or illegal with the romance of 60-year-old folk singer Freddie Aguilar with a 16-year-old girl since it has the blessing of the teenager's parents.
The report quoted Ilagan as saying that Aguilar did not violate any law by falling in love with the girl. "We have no problem with that. No law was violated, there is no abuse, she was not forced, and her parents have given their consent. It is a relationship of mutual consent. Malaki lang ang age gap," she said.
Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said that while he is not supporting Aguilar's relationship with his girlfriend who is not only 44 years his junior "he is also not objecting to it since he does not remember any case that marriage cannot work because of a disparity in age." Aguilar has publicly expressed his desire to marry the girl once she turns 18.
