Hoax alert! Phivolcs says rumors of another magnitude 8 quake happening in Visayas are false
Nobody can predict when the next quake will occur.
David Dizon of ABS-CBNNews.com reports that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) has urged the public not to believe rumors that "a new volcano is growing in Bohol province and that a magnitude 8 earthquake will hit parts of the Visayas soon."
The report explained that according to Phivolcs director Renato Solidum, there is very little chance that an even more powerful quake will hit the Visayas and that there are currently no instrument available anywhere in the world that can predict earthquakes. Several text and Facebook posts have been circulating warning the public to prepare for a magnitude 8 earthquake in Bohol and Cebu after last week’s magnitude 7.2 quake.
In the press briefing held on Monday (October 21), "Solidum also denied that the appearance of sinkholes in parts of Bohol is a sign that a volcano is forming in the province." He said it is just the result of liquefaction or "the ejection of buried soft sediments and fluids" and not a sign that a new volcano will soon rise.
