Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Ariella Arida apologizes for saying, "Latinas can’t even speak a complete sentence in English"
One word: "Yikes!"
Michael Joe Delizo of Manila Bulletin reports that Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Ariella Arida has apologized on Twitter over the reportedly "offensive" remark she made about Latinas during an interview aired on a cable news channel on Monday, October 21.
Â
The report explained that some netizens were offended when Arida said "Latinas cannot even speak... a complete sentence in English" during an interview with Karen Davila on ABS-CBN News Channel's "Headstart" show. Following the deluge of online criticism, Arida immediately took to Twitter to apologize for her supposed faux pas. "OM sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone from my last interview. I hope you guys can understand what Im trying to say," she tweeted on Tuesday, October 22.
Â
One of Arida's critics on social media was Radio DJ Mo Twister, who posted a 15-second excerpt of the interview on his Instagram account (djmotwister) on Tuesday. Part of DJ Mo's caption on the video read: "I'm also quite certain that a few of the Latina contestants can cook up a few intelligible lines in English that would leave Ariella here dizzy in her heels." His post has already garnered more than 400 comments as of Tuesday night.
