Barangay Bel-Air chairwoman accused of corruption by former beauty queen Aurora Pijuan
Hot village politics!
Christine F. Herrera of Manila Standard Today reports that Constancia Lichuaco, the barangay captain of affluent Barangay Bel-Air in Makati, has been "charged with graft for supposedly spending government money to pay her daughter-in-law’s catering company for non-existent events and to make fake donations to charities. "
Former bauty queen Aurora Pijuan filed a complaint against Barangay Bel-Air chair Constancia Lichuaco, saying she spent P404,560 to pay catering company Two Chefs Corp. for events that did not happen. Lichuaco has also been accused of donating as much as P1.4 million in "fake donations" to charitable organizations. Pijuan added that the Ombudsman should look into the alleged misuse of the barangay’s P540-million share of income taxes.
Lichuaco said, though, that the barangay never had that much money in the first place. "Bel-Air's annual budget only runs to P150 million to P170 million. I wish for Pijuan to produce that P540 million because it was going to be a big help to the barangay," she said in the report. Lichuaco, who has been barangay chair of Bel-Air for 21 years, dismissed the allegations as part of a continuous demolition job against her family.
