More than 43 lawmakers back resolution to grant Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo a "Christmas furlough"
They say they’ve taken pity on her because her health has severely deteriorated.
ABS-CBNnews.com reports that more than 43 lawmakers are said to be backing "a resolution urging the Sandiganbayan to grant a Christmas furlough for detained former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo." The principal author of House Resolution 537 is 1BAP Party-list Rep. Silvestre Bello III, a former Arroyo Cabinet secretary.
The report noted: "Arroyo, now a Pampanga lawmaker, is detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) for plunder charges in connection with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PSCO) fund scam. She is appealing the court’s denial of her bail petition."
According to the report, Bello hopes the Sandiganbayan will allow Arroyo to have a break from her detention or a furlough with her family from December 21 to 30. Bello added that the number of days will be up to the discretion of the court. He also explained that the was prompted to file the resolution after an accidental meeting with Arroyo at the VMMC, as he was then playing at the VMMC golf course. "Talagang payat na payat, anliit na niya (She was so thin and she looked so small). When I saw her, I took pity. She was very ill," he revealed.
Bello said that it looked like Arroyo only weighs "70 to 80 pounds." He related, "Nawala ang pagka-flawless niya, kulubot (Her skin no longer looked flawless. She was wrinkled)." As such, he has asked Arroyo’s camp for her latest medical records so he can attach them to the resolution when it goes through plenary deliberations.
