P-Noy won't introduce new taxes in 2014, says Palace

Oh, really?

Genalyn Kabiling of the Manila Bulletin reports that President Benigno S. Aquino III will keep his promise not to introduce new taxes this year, according to Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.

The report quoted Coloma as saying on Thursday (January 2) that Aquino will "abide by his campaign commitment" in 2010 not to introduce additional tax measures. He added that the government "was able to raise the budget of government agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Health, and the Department of Education from 2010 to 2014 'by several multiples without need for raising new taxes.'"

Coloma clarified, however, that the increase in taxes of "sin products" such as liquor and cigarettes for 2014 will still be implemented to generate additional funds for public health care services.
