First "sporty" monument of Jose Rizal to be unveiled in Laguna

The big reveal of the look and the exact location happens in May.

Earl Rosero of GMA News Online reports that "the province of Laguna is set to unveil a 25-foot tall monument depicting the Philippines’ national hero Jose Rizal as an "eskrimador" and dueler during the 2014 Palarong Pambansa in May.

The report noted that the monument, which will be the first to depict Rizal as a sportsman, will have Rizal "wearing an eskrima or fencing uniform and holding an eskrima sword in his right hand and a duel pistol in the left hand." Eskrima is a Filipino martial art which is similar to fencing.

Laguna governor Jeorge "ER" Ejercito said the monument "was commissioned to sculptor Toym Imao, son of National Artist for Sculpture Abdulmari Asia Imao." The newest statue of Rizal will be the tallest monument of the national hero in the country once it's unveiled, the governor added.
