P-Noy denies "balato" spiel to Sen. Bong Revilla during their meeting at the height of the Corona impeachment trial
He says he can’t influence nor pressure any of the senators.
Jojo Malig of ABS-CBNnews.com reports that President Benigno Aquino has denied asking Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. to vote to impeach then-Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona as a favor or "balato" when they met sometime in the early months of 2012. In his privilege speech last Monday, January 20, Revilla claimed that Aquino had told him, "Pare, parang awa mo na, ibalato mo na sa akin ito. Kailangan siya ma-impeach (Man, have pity, do me a favor. He needs to be impeached)."
According to the report, Aquino said in a one-on-one interview aired on the nightly newscast Bandila on Tuesday (January 21) that it is not his practice to ask someone for "balato," contrary to the claim made by Revilla during his Senate privilege speech on January 20. "It’s not my dialogue. Anong hinihingi ko, balato? Nagsabong ba siya at nanalo siya? This is a serious no," the President said.
Aquino insisted he did not pressure any of the senators to vote for Corona's ouster in the impeachment trial, noting that the Senate is like a powerful group of "24 kingdoms" that cannot be easily influenced by anyone.
