Women lawmakers "take over" the House of Representatives for a day in celebration of Int’l Women’s Month
Another De Venecia became House Speaker.
Christine Herrera of the Manila Standard Today reports that "79 congresswomen, led by Pangasinan Rep. Georgina "Gina" de Venecia, donned their haute couture gowns on Monday (March 3) as they temporarily took over key positions in the House of Representatives as part of International Women's Month."
According to the report, the lawmakers proceeded to take turns "in presiding over the session and dominated the floor 'in style' by delivering privilege speeches on women and children's health and welfare." Just for a day, De Venecia took over the House Speakership post occupied by Rep. Feliciano Belmonte, Jr., who was content to watch at the sidelines while the lady lawmakers took charge of the entire session.
The other female lawmakers who assumed key House positions for a day were Rep. Rosenda Ann Ocampo as the Majority Leader with Reps. Susan Yap, Josephine Sato and Marie Anne Pernes as Deputy Majority Leaders.
