Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza wants Koreanovelas, other foreign teleseryes banned from primetime
It’s another one of those crazy ideas from our lawmakers.
InterAksyon.com reports that former Manila mayor and now Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza has filed a bill seeking to ban the airing of foreign-produced soap operas or teleseryes on Philippine television during prime-time, or between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
According to the report, Atienza said he filed House Bill 3839 "to compel the state to protect the local entertainment industry and promote creativity needed to spur production and increase employment." He reasoned that local producers have ceased making original teleseryes because these are pushed to unfavorable or late timeslots because foreign television series, such as Koreanovelas, are shown on prime time.
Atienza said that while he is aware that his proposal will draw controversy, he will continue to push for its passage in Congress so that local producers can be empowered "to create content and employ more local talents."
