Jewelry store in SM Mall of Asia robbed by men carrying metal pipes, guns

Expect security to be beefed up temporarily inside the malls after this heist. reports that "an undetermined number of robbers armed with metal pipes and handguns barged into a jewelry shop at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City Sunday evening (March 30) and shot it out with responding policemen before escaping with their loot."

According to the report, authorities were able to arrest one of the suspected robbers after the heist. An employee of a nearby ice cream kiosk, however, had to be brought to the hospital after being grazed by a bullet during the robbers' confrontation with the police.

Based on witness' accounts, "the men suddenly barged into the SMC jewelry shop at the mall's ground floor about 7:30p.m., and started smashing the glass display cases while one of them also fired his gun to scare off shoppers."

While the police have determined that the pipes the robbers used were not bought inside the mall, they are still at a loss in explaining how the men were able to sneak their handguns inside the mall despite the presence of security guards.
