Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago reveals she’s battling Stage 4 lung cancer...and manages to joke about it
If there’s anyone who can bounce back from this, it’s her.
Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has just proven that she’s got enough guts for an entire nation or, heck, even a whole galaxy.
In a press briefing at the Senate today, Wednesday, July 2, Santiago announced simply, "I have Stage 4 lung cancer."
Santiago explained, "Everytime I was checked for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), I would get a CT scan but they couldn’t see it because my lungs were already filled with fluid and it just appeared as a small blur on the scan."
Ira Pedrasa of ABS-CBNnews.com reports that after revealing that her cancer "is not metastatic," which means, it is not spreading, Santiago went on to joke about her condition.
"This is good news. When they examined my biopsy, they discovered that certain persons like myself who are very, very lucky, have been capable of genetic mutation, maybe from living a healthy lifestyle. I don't even commit adultery. I only tell lies to my husband," Santiago stated.
She also quipped, "I believed in discipline all my life. Even my cancer cells are showing excellent discipline."
For the record, it’s Santiago’s left lung that has cancer cells.
Santiago explained that she would be under treatment for a few weeks. She said, "When I go into remission, I might announce my candidacy for president for 2016 unless God gives me another disease."
