Last Home Stand All-Star Charity exhibition game turns into training camp for Gilas Pilipinas
Well, that was awkward
From game on to no game? Sports fans and patrons left the SMART-Araneta Coliseum upset, angry, and disappointed after the Last Home Stand All-Star Charity exhibition game became a "glorified training camp" for Gilas Pilipinas. Our national team was supposed to go up against the visiting NBA players for a friendly scrimmage on July22 (Tuesday), but certain clauses in their contract prevented the foreign ballers from participating in any kind of game.
The audience booed and cursed in contempt, as some of them came all the way from Nueva Ecija expecting an exhilirating match. Some paid P50,000 to sit in the patron section and angrily said, "P50,000 tapos practice lang? C'mon, don't fool us again."
They also took to social media and the awkward blunder became a trending topic on Twitter and other platforms.
"We would like to apologize. We at PLDT extend our sincerest apologies," PLDT/Smart top chief Manny V. Pangilinan said. Later on in a press conference that evening, Pangilinan announced that they are cancelling the "game" scheduled for Wednesday and that ticket holders would get a refund. PLDT executive vice president Ariel Fermin added that they will also refund the tickets of the disgruntled customers for Tuesday’s "open workout session."
