Pinoy teacher among winners of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award

ABS-CBNNews.com reported on Thursday, July 31, that the winners of the Ramon Magsaysay Award have been announced. Among them is Randy Halasan, a 31-year-old teacher who is receiving what is frequently dubbed as Asia’s Nobel Prize for teaching the children of the Matigsalug tribe in one of the remotest areas of Bukidnon.
The other winners are Chinese journalist Hu Shuli, founder of Caijing, a magazine famous for investigative journalism pieces that had a large impact on China; Chinese lawyer Wang Canfa, founder of a firm that focuses on environmental cases; Indonesian Anthropologist Saur Marlina Manurung, who helped put up jungle schools for forest people in her country; and National Museum of Afghanistan director Omara Khan Masoudi, for protecting heritage pieces against insurgents after the objects were considered non-Muslim artifacts.
The Pakistani non-government group The Citizen’s Foundation also won the award for putting up schools that give equal opportunity to young females in their country.
