Davao declares Ramon Bautista unwelcome due to "hipon" joke and #PasisikatinKitaHija post on Instagram
Monra non grata
Despite Ramon Bautista’s immediate apology following his controversial hipon joke during Davao City’s Kadayawan festival last Saturday (August 16), the city council officially declared him a persona non grata on Tuesday (August 19). The Davao City council cited in its resolution that Bautista is not a good influence on the youth and his abusive behavior would not be tolerated. Strictly as an observation, this sounds funny when said by a man who threatens to kill people.
The resolution also cited a photo in Bautista’s instagram account, where he is seen with three "young" girls. The caption for the photo read, "Ito ang kabataan ngayon hihi. #kadayawan #PasisikatinKitaHijaFoundation".
Bautista apologized once more on Monday night via his Twitter account. Following the declaration of the city council on Tuesday night, he tweeted, "I respect the decision of the Davao officials, and I will abide by it."
In the festival, Bautista reportedly egged on the crowd to chant the word hipon immediately after using the word to refer to the women of Davao. Hipon is a colloquial term used to describe people who are only attractive from the neck down. Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte confronted him about the joke, prompting Bautista to apologize to the booing crowd.
