Transgender model Geena Rocero pushes for Anti-Discrimination Bill
She’s back in Manila, ready to break barriers
In an interview with Karen Davila in ANC’s Headstart, transgender model Geena Rocero talks about human rights and why she’s eager to push for a law that will protect members of the LGBT community from being marginalized or discriminated against.
"Here in the Philippines, there’s transgender beauty pageants on national television. [It’s culturally celebrated] but not politically recognized. In the West, it’s a bit more rigid, but there’s a law that protects [the LGBT community]." Rocero told Davil. She then continued, "[If] there’s a big set of the LGBT population that’s being marginalized, how can you flourish as a country?"
According to the report by Caroline Howard, Rocero seeks to open a dialogue about same sex marriage and to rally support for a comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Bill.
Rocero made waves when she gave an inspiring TED talk March of this year. The video, uploaded on the TED website, has since garnered more than 2 million views.
