Selfie declared "Word of the Year" at Sawikaan 2014

It was also the Oxford University Press’ word of the year in 2013

The Philippine Star reported on Friday (September 26) that "selfie" was declared the word of the year at Sawikaan 2014, held at the University of the Philippines (Diliman). Selfie bested Bossing, CCTV, Endo, Filipinas, Hashtag, Imba, Kalakal, PDAF, Peg, Riding-in-tandem, Storm Surge, and Whistleblower.


Endo and Filipinas placed second and third respectively.


This is the fourth time that the word of the year involves a mobile communcation device. In 2006, lobat was the word of the year. The following year, the word miskol was chosen. In 2010, it was the popular "text speak" jejemon.


Sawikaan is organized by the Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc., in partnership with the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and University of the Philippines College of Arts and Letters.
