MMDA Traffic Enforcer selling kakanin recommended for promotion

It pays to go viral

The love from Internet users might’ve warmed Fernando Gonzales’s heart, but his boss is giving him a better reward. On Tuesday, the Philippine Star reported that Gonzales, an MMDA Traffic Enforcer by day and kakanin vendor on other days, has been recommended for a promotion.

Gonzales met with MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, who praised his amusing and honest way to earn additional money. However, the chairman made sure that selling kakanin didn’t interfere with the job.

He also shared that he thought he would be reprimanded for selling kakanin"Naka-uniform ako kasi ’pag nakaordinaryong damit po ako hindi naman po sila bibili e."

Gonzales has been with the MMDA since 1990 and earns P15,000 a month. When asked if he was ever tempted to take a bribe, he responded affirmatively, but explained that he was too afraid of losing his job, "Sa kalagayan po namin, hindi na po uso iyon [extortion].
