UP filmmaker makes it to the International Students Creative Award 2014 in Osaka
Senator Trillanes would be proud
Neica Dela Cruz didn’t expect that out of 410 submissions, her small-budget short film Lunod would be one of the six finalsits for the International Students Creative Award 2014 in Osaka. Lunod was Dela Cruz’s student thesis and even for a thesis, her budget was, according to the report by InterAksyon, miniscule.
"’Yung [P]15[,000] na ’yun sobrang liit. Kasi alam ko yung mga kasabayan ko sa UP Film yung mga thesis nila umaabot ng [P]350, or [P]500,. So, like, sobrang liit talaga nung [P]15[,000]," she told InterAksyon, adding that she saved the money she received under Senator Trillanes’ scholarship program to pay for her short film.
Dela Cruz joined because the requirements were very minimal, adding that she forgot about it immediately after submitting the email. To her surprise, she received a reply a month later, informing her that she qualified for the competition.
But because the other finalists are experienced filmmakers, Dela Cruz told InterAksyon that she doesn’t want to get her hopes up. "Yung iba sobrang batikan na sa competition. Sinearch ko sa Google ’yung isa medyo 15 international competitions na nasalihan niya. So wala talaga akong expectation manalo. ’Yung makapunta ako ng Japan na libre ang hotel at airfare, sobrang OK na prize ’yun."
