A photo of DILG Secretary Mar Roxas falling off a bike circulated on Sunday and the Internet was quick to point out the fact that he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Aside from the lack of proper safety gear, several social media users and bloggers also wondered why someone in his positions was doing "field work."
On Monday, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte came to the secretary’s defense and said, "Sana huwag na po nating bigyan ng kulay. Kawawa na nga ho ’yung tao nandun na at sumemplang na nga ho[.] Pasalamat po tayo-pasalamat po kami, at least, hindi ho nasaktan si Secretary Mar."
According to Valte, only a bike could pass through the roads in the devastated areas in Samar where the secretary was making rounds. Instead of making memes, Valte urged the public to shift their attention to the relief operations. We concur, as substandard temporary shelters seem to be worth more outrage.
