Pope Francis did NOT say dogs go to heaven

To err is human

News of Pope Francis supposedly saying that pets are welcome in heaven was shared over the weekend...but, late Sunday, a handful of publications that ran the story sent out an apology. Vatican's deputy spokesman, Reverend Ciro Benedettini, said on Saturday, "There is a fundamental rule in journalism. That is double-checking, and in this case it was not done."

Several news agencies, including The New York Times and CNN, have issued apologies for running the story. The comment, attributed to the current pope, was actually made by Pope Paul VI, and what he said was, "One day we will see our animals in the eternity of Christ."
