Prepare to Refresh: DOST to Install Free Public WiFi Across the Country
We never have to be apart, Spotters
(SPOT.ph) It’s almost too good to be true and maybe it is. We don’t want to get your hopes up and, well, the two leading service providers are offering free Internet data for mobile anyway. Still, the news about the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) planning on giving us free WiFi in plazas, schools, hospital, piers, government offices, and airport terminals by July is a good break from the Mamasapano he-said-he-said and the Makati Stand-Off.
Before you get too excited, the agency first has to find a private company to partner with, and there will be a data cap to prevent people from abusing the connection. DOST is not doing this so you can curate your life online. NTC Director Edgardo Cabarrios told GMA News that they’re doing it to be more vigilant and critical of the government, "Kasi kung may free WiFi, ma-access nila yung mga information na dapat iparating sa kanila."
Incidentally, the Freedom of Information Bill’s funding was approved on March 4 and is moving to the plenary.
