Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said Monday she received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Belmonte, who survived COVID-19 twice, said she got the Chinese-made Sinovac jab at Ateneo de Manila University. Mayors are part of the priority group for vaccines, right behind health workers.
"Although I am part of the A1 category, I decided to wait until most of those in the identified priority groups had been vaccinated. Also, after just recovering from COVID-19 last month, I did not see the need for me to be vaccinated immediately," she said in a statement.
Belmonte said she received the 322,056th dose of COVID-19 vaccine administered in Quezon City, and encouraged the public to get the jab too.
"Dahil dalawang beses kong naranasang magka-COVID-19, batid ko ang kahalagahan ng bakuna upang maiwasan ang pagkakaroon ng malalang sakit na dulot ng virus," she said.
"I hope that by having been vaccinated, I could encourage more QCitizens to get inoculated too against COVID-19," she added.
