Alex Eala's Red Tennis Outfit Looks Like an Homage to the PH Flag

(SPOT.ph) It’d be pretty hard to scroll through your feed now without seeing something about Filipino tennis player Alexandra “Alex” Eala. And honestly? Deserved. All eyes are on the 19-year-old athlete, having made history as the first Filipina to reach the semifinals of a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournament.
It’s not every day that we see a Filipino blaze trails in the tennis scene, and Eala is doing just that in her signature fiery-red court outfit. Apart from shifting the spotlight towards Filipino skill and talent with her impressive performances, we can’t help but think her ‘fit is an homage to the Philippine flag.

Eala wore a bright red tennis skirt and a deep crimson shirt from Nike for her groundbreaking matches against World No. 2 Madison Keys and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Emblazoned on one sleeve is the Globe logo, and on the other is BPI's. While ubiquitous in daily life in the Philippines, the local brands don’t get that much screen time on the international stage as sponsor logos, and not with that many eyes watching.

The blue, white, and yellow
To complete the look, Eala sported a white sun visor, also from Nike, and royal blue nail polish that shone as she held the mic in her victory interviews. You might say “She’s missing the yellow of the Philippine flag,” but we’d argue that her bright personality and optimism more than do the job of representing the sunny shade. But we did spot a bit of yellow there--the gold huggie hoops on her ears.
You could call us delusional for thinking it was a nod to the Philippine flag, but we’re free to live in a reality where Eala is serving victories on the court through sheer athletic ability and subtle but powerful style choices—be it on purpose or not.
