Lower Bills for Manila Water, Maynilad Customers Starting March 21

Manila Water and Maynilad customers can expect lower bills starting March 21 with the removal of the value-added tax, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System said Thursday.

Customers' bills will still be subject to the 2% national franchise tax and the franchise tax implemented by the local government unit, the MWSS said.

The said tax will be reflected in consumers' water bills as "government tax", it added.

"These changes will result in a reduction in Maynilad and Manila Water customers’ monthly water bills," the MWSS said.

The development came after the two water concessionaires secured fresh 25-year franchises from the government in December last year.

The new franchises were granted months after Manila Water and Maynilad agreed to revised concession agreements with the government which President Rodrigo Duterte in 2019 said contained "unfair" provisions at the expense of consumers.
