Marikina City residents on Friday tried to salvage what is left of their homes after severe floods spawned by Typhoon Ulysses subsided, sifting through mud-caked appliances and cars.
Wearing a face mask and covered in mud from the waist down, Alex Rodriguez was among those who waded through murky waters to save what he can from his home in Provident Village.
Rodriguez and his neighbors scraped off mud from chairs, cabinets, and other items that were ruined by the storm. It's a familiar scene across the country where Ulysses and past storms also caused flooding.
In another part of the village, lawyer Abet Reyes tried to salvage mud-covered equipment of the Provident Table Tennis Club.
Floods triggered by Ulysses prompted calls of help and rescue from residents of Marikina on Thursday with city mayor Marcy Teodoro even appealing for air assets to save trapped residents.
Photos of Filipinos trapped in roofs and wading through chest-deep waters flooded social media, drawing comparisons to Typhoon Ondoy's deluge in 2009.
At least 14 people were reported dead as of Friday morning but authorities said the number could go higher as cleanup and relief operations continue.
