Government approves discounts for jeepney fares starting April
This announcement comes a few days after the Department of Transportation proposed to lower fares for public transport vehicles through a memorandum issued to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. Other vehicles in the proposal include modern PUVs and UV express, so we can also expect changes for those soon.
"We are just waiting for the downloading of the money to the LTFRB. Pagkatapos niyan, tuloy-tuloy na ‘yung Service Contracting Program," Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chair Teofilo Guadiz III said in a statement.
The agency is waiting on the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for funds and guidance on implementing the Service Contracting Program for the discounted fares.
"I believe the budget may last only for about 6 months, half a year. So as early as now, I am requesting the DOTr to come up with additional funding para mapagkasya po namin hanggang sa katapusan ng taon ‘yung pera,” Guadiz added.
Discounted routes can also take effect in provinces outside the Metro, DOTr Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor told GMA's Unang Balita.
