Expect More Walkways, PUV Stops, and a 9.6-Kilometer Bike Lane in Intramuros Soon

(SPOT.ph) The walled city of Intramuros is improving its accessibility with more space for active and public transportation on the way.

The Department of Transportation will be constructing a 9.6-kilometer bike lane, pedestrian walkways with PWD-accessibility ramps, and four public utility vehicle stops to service almost two million annual visitors. Enhancing mobility within Intramuros also stands to benefit the schools, hospitals, and government offices that surround the vicinity.

This P64.16-million expansion project was signed in September 2022 but has only begun construction now. If everything goes to plan, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said it should be completed by the fourth quarter of 2023. 

“Expanding active transport facilities here will bridge the historical charm of Intramuros with the modern appeal of alternative transport,” DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said during the groundbreaking ceremony. “Napakasaya ng community dito.”

Where to find the active and public transport expansion project in Intramuros

DOTr's bike lanes will stretch 9.6 kilometers in Intramuros.

Class 1 bike lanes will be constructed along General Luna Street, parts of Sta. Clara Street, Postigo Street, Sto. Tomas Street, and parts of Padre Burgos Avenue; Class 2 in parts of Muralla Street, parts of Real Street, Anda Street, and Victoria Street; and Class 3 in parts of A. Soriano Avenue to Bonifacio Drive, Victoria Street to Padre Burgos Avenue, and Gen. Luna Street to Palacio Street. 

But what do these classes mean? According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, bicycle facilities are classified into three categories:

• Class 1: Shared Use Path will be exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians
• Class 2: Separated Bike Lane will be distinguished by paint stripe, curb, or barrier for exclusive bicycle use
• Class 3: Shared Roadway will be officially marked as a bicycle route but can be used by motor vehicles

On the other hand, the new PUV stops will be located in Anda Gap (inbound and outbound), Round Table (inbound), and Jones Bridge to Anda Gap.
