(SPOT.ph) The LRT-1 and LRT-2 fare hike is officially happening in August, following several months of discussion with the Department of Transportation’s Rail Regulatory Unit.

Starting August 2, the minimum boarding fee for both LRT-1 and LRT-2 will cost P13.29 from the previous P11, with an additional P1.21 per kilometer of rail travel from the previous P1.

Assistant Secretary for Railways Jorjette Aquino said this fare adjustment will be used to enhance the LRT-1 and LRT-2’s services, amenities, and technical capacities.

“We at the Department of Transportation believe that this fare adjustment will contribute to maintaining affordable mass transportation services for the two commuter-train lines,” Aquino said in a statement. “We are aiming to make our rail services more accessible, convenient, and efficient for commuters.”

A 20% discount is still maintained for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

In April, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. deferred the fare hike implementation, citing the negative economic impact it would have on commuters. Now national government sees this hike is “now ready to be implemented with the economy’s improving growth rate and employment figures,” the DOTr said in a statement.

The last approved fare hikes for LRT-1 and LRT-2 was back in 2015.
