(SPOT.ph) This time fully clothed and with their game faces on, the members of the national rugby team, otherwise known as the Philippine Volcanoes, are all set to embark on their upcoming tournament in China on August 27. The team will compete in the Men’s Asian Football Rugby Union (ARFU) 7s in Shanghai.
During the ceremonial jersey presentation yesterday at the Legend Villas Hotel, newly appointed captain Jake Letts said that part of their strategy is to use larger players to match up against their opponents. He also expressed his pride for the Volcanoes for getting this far after only a short period of time. The rugby team was formally assembled in 2004.
While they are primarily known for a controversial set of billboards that showed some members of the team posing only in their skivvies, the Volcanoes are actually one of the top-ranking teams in the country, said Philippine Rugby Football Union secretary-general Rick Santos. Having won top prizes in the 2005 Asian Games and the 2007 Southeast Asian Games, the Volcanoes are well-positioned to qualify for several other tournaments like the Asian 5 Nations Premier Division in the International Rugby Board (IRB) Rugby World Cup Qualification in 2013, the IRB Rugby World C and Asian Sevens Series in 2014, and the Olympics in 2016.
