PAGASA: Expect Above Normal Rainfall From January to March
That's how you know it's La Niña season.
(SPOT.ph) Prepare for a wet start to the year as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warns of higher chances of above-normal rainfall from January to March, thanks to the ongoing La Niña phenomenon.
The La Niña phenomenon has strengthened further since it started in September 2024, bringing cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. This shift is expected to disrupt typical weather patterns, resulting in increased rainfall and heightened risks of weather-related hazards.
According to PAGASA, December 2024 recorded sea surface temperature anomalies of -0.5°C or lower. In English? Expect heavier rains that could lead to floods, flash floods, and landslides in high-risk areas.
Climate models predict these conditions will persist through March. PAGASA also noted an increased chance of tropical cyclones forming within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) during this period, so it’s time to keep those umbrellas and emergency kits within reach.

Amihan season is here, too
To make things more interesting, the Philippines is also in the middle of the amihan season. The amihan brings cooler air to the country, particularly affecting Northern Luzon. It is expected to last until March or early April.
However, its interaction with La Niña and other weather systems like the shear line and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is contributing to cloudy skies and wet conditions in various parts of the Philippines. It looks like aircon weather might be here to stay.
