Heads Up, Students: You Can Soon Ride Trains for Free

So you can go far.

(SPOT.ph) For students who regularly take the train on their way to their schools, here's good news. Starting July 1, students can ride the Metro Rail Transit Line 3, Light Rail Transit Line 2, and the Philippine National Railway for free, announced the Department of Transportation on June 27.

According to a report by Philippine Daily Inquirer, the free train rides for students will be available only on regular school days (Monday to Friday, except holidays), following the schedule below:

Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT 3)

  • 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.
  • 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT 2)

  • 4:30 a.m. to 6 a.m.
  • 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Philippine National Railway

  • 5 a.m. to 6 a.m.
  • 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

According to Department of Transport (DOTr) Sec. Arthur Tugade, all students need to do is show their school ID to get a free pass. Once all kinks have been ironed out for the program, students will have to register online to apply for the "Student Free Ride ID" to avail of the free rides. They can also register at Malasakit Help Desks at train stations and other terminals. Issuance of this special ID is free.

"Alisin ho natin diyan 'yong mga bata sa gitgitan. Ang kapalit, maagang papasok ang mga estudyante," said Sec. Tugade in a tweet on the official DOTr account.

Airport terminal fees will also be waived for students, although this will take about another month to process, according to a GMA News report. Students passing through seaports will also have waived terminal fees starting July 16,  said the report.
