Mark Your Calendars: A Metro-Wide Earthquake Drill Is Happening This Month
Be sure you're ready for the big one!
(SPOT.ph) The Philippines is located in a very special place: the Pacific Ring of Fire, and yes, it is as suspenseful as it sounds. The Ring of Fire is an area that contains about 75% of the world's volcanoes and is marked by a high number of earthquakes. Which is why, to ensure the people are ready for any contingency, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has announced a city-wide earthquake drill on July 27 at 4 a.m.
You might be raising your eyebrows at the early hour, but it's for good reason. Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Jojo Garcia said that the strange hour is to test how well the city could react should an earthquake strike when people are most likely asleep and therefore, the least ready, in a report by the Philippine News Agency. Also, expect to receive text notifications sometime during the drill, according to the MMDA.
In coordination with the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the entire Metro will be split into four quadrants should a major earthquake hit. Each quadrant already has an assigned evacuation site, though people will not be required to evacuate for the drill.
Here they are, just in case:
- North (San Juan City, Mandaluyong City, and Quezon City) - Veterans Memorial Medical Center
- South (Makati City, Pasay City, Pateros City, Paranaque City, Taguig City, Las Piñas City, and Muntinlupa City) - Villamor Airbase
- East (Marikina City and Pasig City) - Light Rail Transit Line 2 depot in Santolan
- West (Valenzuela City, Malabon City, Navotas City, Caloocan City, and Manila City) - Intramuros Golf Course
