Resignations Are Trending and Folks Online Go "Meh"
Think any offers to resign will be taken seriously anytime soon?
(SPOT.ph) You remember those times when there was a fight on school grounds and you could choose to tune it out? Well, when something similar is happening at the House of Representatives, it gets a lot harder to ignore. A whole shebang occured in congress today, September 30, after incumbent House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano offered to resign to make way for Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco—which won't happen because 184 lawmakers promptly voted to reject the offer.
You might recall the two are supposed to be going halfsies on the Speaker of the House role, or at least, sharing the current term as announced by President Rodrigo Duterte in July 2019. Cayetano is to be the House Speaker until October 2020, with Velasco taking over until the 18th Congress ends in 2022. Velasco has reminded the former of the brokered "gentleman's agreement" between them. The chances of Velasco actually becoming House Speaker are looking pretty slim now, based on the reaction of the House to Cayetano's offer of resignation today.
Cayetano made the offer to resign in a speech during a plenary session. He noted that he and Velasco had met with the President the night before—to talk about more than just the speakership issue, he assured the people. Still, it seems the latest developments have had everyone abuzz.
"Cayetano" was once again a hot topic on local Twitterverse, and there was major shade being thrown around. This isn't the first offer of resignation from someone in the current administration and we suppose it won't be the last. Check out just how people reacted to these recent events online:
