(SPOT.ph) Biking in Metro Manila can be extremely challenging. It doesn't help that motorists, from motorcycle riders to car owners, sometimes occupy these bike lanes meant to keep two-wheel riders safe. In an effort to keep the roads conducive to bikers, Quezon City's Green Transport Office deployed bike patrols to assist cyclists, rearrange misaligned bike barriers, clean bike lanes, and crack down on drivers passing through bike lanes.

"Ang bike lane ay para lamang po sa mga bisikleta, e-bike, at e-scooter. Iwasan lang po sana natin na magpark o dumaan sa bike lane upang hindi tayo magkaroon ng multa," they reminded everyone in a post on their Facebook page.
According to the Traffic Management Code of Quezon City approved in 2004, "motor vehicles are prohibited from being driven or parked on any lane of a public street or path reserved exclusively for bicycles and provided with a sign bearing a symbol of bicycle." Plus, an ordinance promoting safe cycling that was approved in 2020, penalizes motorists who use cycling lanes or walking paths with a fine ranging from P1,000 for the first offense and P5,000 with 30 hours of community service for the third offense.
The Green Transport Office (GTO) under the Department of Public Order and Safety was created as part of Quezon City's move to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles. One of their solutions is to promote bike-riding, which is not only good for the environment but also beneficial for the health and well-being of the public. And to do this, GTO makes sure that the Quezon City Bike Lane Network Project is on full force.
