(SPOT.ph) With physical distancing the number one rule during a pandemic, a number of establishments have gone cashless through QR-code payment channels or tap cards. It minimizes having to touch coins or paper bills that were transferred from one person to another. To follow suit, LRT-1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation launched today, December 9, the newest innovation for the beep™ payment. You can now buy from Master Siomai stalls at the Baclaran, EDSA, and Balintawak LRT-1 stations using your beep card.

This deployment hopes to encourage more LRT-1 merchants to participate in the project, which will provide a portable "Standalone Payment and Loading Device" to the kiosks so they can process beep-card transactions. Patrons can also load their beep cards minus the extra charge at these stalls. It is expected to promote faster payment, reduce the need for coins and loose change, follow accurate transactions, and enable handling of less cash for hygienic purposes.
"At Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), we believe that safety and convenience go hand in hand. Contactless transactions have become part of the new normal for a safer and more convenient travel experience. We came up with this initiative putting in mind not just our commuters, but also our station merchants which will enable them to create operational efficiencies leading to better customer service," LRMC Corporate Communications and Customer Relations Head Jacqueline Gorospe said in a statement.
As of writing, beep cards are being used at the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3; P2P buses; and modern PUVs. Loading stations are found at the train stations, transport terminals, and Ministop branches.
