SPOT.ph Roadtest: 10 Mascaras Under P500

Which budget mascara is best?

(SPOT.ph) Anyone who's ever experimented with makeup would know that it's hard not to get a tiny bit obsessed with mascara-it is, after all, one of the quickest ways to look better than your recently-rolled-out-of-bed self, just one or two swipes making you instantly bright-eyed. But for those who find that a three-month shelf life is a little too, well, little to pay four figures for, we rounded up 10 tubes that cost less than P500. Find out which ones are worth more than their price tag.

Products are listed according to price, from lowest to highest.

Freshian Volumizing Mascara (P195)

What the package promises: [No packaging]

Waterproof? No.

Application: The bristles are far apart (enough), which makes the application easy, but the liquid is very thick!

Was it clumpy? Yes (but it dries nicely).

Did it smudge? No.

Would you buy it? Yes.

Available at The Face Shop

L.A. Colors X Volume Mascara (P249)

What the package promises: "Get extreme volume with each stroke to your lashes! Specially formulated with Vitamin E and Panthenol to moisturize and help thicken lashes with no smearing, smudging or clumping."

Waterproof? No.

Application: Easy enough, but it doesn't really comb through the strands. The goop makes some strands cling to each other a little and the brush does nothing to separate them.

Was it clumpy? Yes.

Did it smudge? Not smudgy but it flakes. You have to check for little black spots around your eyes.

Would you buy it? No.

Available at Crossings Department Store

Elf Studio Mineral Infused Mascara (P249.75)

What the package promises: To "lengthen, separate, and volumize lashes instantly."

Waterproof? Yes.

Application: Pretty easy. The bristles are far apart enough to avoid the solution from clumping together but still near enough to look natural.

Was it clumpy? No.

Did it smudge? No. It looks pretty real. Like your real lashes but prettier and perkier.

Would you buy it? Yes.

Available at Crossings Department Store

Maybelline Hyper Curl Volum Express (P299)

What the package promises: This mascara has "a powerful curl-lock formula" to give you "voluminous, curled eyelashes for up to 18 hours."

Waterproof? Yes (it comes in both waterproof and washable).

Application: Maybelline is famous for their curved brush which more or less fits perfectly along the curved lash line.

Was it clumpy? No.

Did it smudge? No, but it wasn’t difficult to wash off with soap and water.

BYS Waterproof Mascara (P369)

Did it smudge? No.

Available at Watsons

Color Collection Super Size Fat Lash Mascara (P399)

What the Package Promises: "Supersize your lashes! Super volumizing mascara for big, bold lashes"

Waterproof? No.

Application: Application was easy because it used the traditional brush for mascaras. It seems dry upon opening and needs two to three swipes for the volumizing effect it promises.

Was it clumpy? No.

Did it smudge? No.

Would you buy it? Yes.

Available at Crossings Department Store

Wet n Wild Mega Plump Waterproof Mascara (P399)

What the package promises: "Up to 3x the volume of your natural lashes"

Waterproof? Yes.

Application: Most of the formula gathers at the tip of the brush. For a mascara that promises to "instantly plump," I had to do two or three swipes to volumize my lashes. Even then, they still looked a bit limp.

Was it clumpy? No.

Did it smudge? No (I actually fell asleep with my makeup on and my mascara did not smudge!).

Would you buy it? No.

Available at Crossings Department Store

Yadah Bloom Mascara (P425)

What the package promises: The mascara is free of talc, artificial fragrance, artificial colorants, and sulfate surfactant and promises to "enrich volume and curl" and be easy to wash off-no makeup remover necessary.

Waterproof? Yes.

Application: Tricky. The brush was slightly curved but the consistency wasn't smooth.

Was it clumpy? Yes.

Did it smudge? No.

Would you buy it? No.

Available at Beauty Bar

Za Killer Volume Mascara (P495)

What the package promises: "Upward killer volume and clump-free lashes"

Waterproof? Yes.

Application: I only had to swipe once on my lashes and they instantly transformed to thicker, longer lashes that easily curled upward just as promised.

Was it clumpy? No.

Did it smudge? Yes. The formula is thick and heavy and takes a while to dry.

Would you buy it? Yes.

Available at Watsons

Cover Girl Clump Crusher by Lashblast Mascara (P495)

What the package promises: The Clump Crusher "delivers 200% more volume and ZERO clumps" (emphasis theirs).

Waterproof? Yes.

Application: Easy. The curved brush helps curl lashes and two to three swipes are enough.
