"Jejemon" declared Word of the Year in Sawikaan 2010
Besting nine other word contenders including "Ampatuan," "Ondoy" and "emo," "jejemon" won Word of the Year in Sawikaan 2010: Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Salita ng Taon, reports GMANews.tv. Organized by the Filipinas Institute of Translation, Inc., the event was held at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City on July 29 and 30.
UP College of Mass Communication Dean Roland Tolentino, who submitted the word "jejemon" to Sawikaan 2010, told Saksi, "This means there’s a recognition after all for this phenomenon that is now very widespread in new media."
The last Word of the Year was "miskol" in 2007, reports ABS-CBNNews.com. There was no Word of the Year for 2008 and 2009 because "the organizers believe no words came out at that period worthy of the title," according to Sawikaan.net.
