Taking inspiration from the era of the speakeasy, Charlie’s in Malugay is definitely a destination for those who like to take the off-the-beaten track. Located inside the Makati Golf Club, it has transformed a once-seedy karaoke place to a spacious wine, jazz and tapas bar. Dressed in black and white, the interiors hark back to the era of the Prohibition in the 1930s in Chicago, with a small stage for the band and a piano along with images of jazz greats on the walls.
The wine list includes bottles from Italy, France, South Africa, California, Chile, and Argentina with prices starting at P125 for a glass. The tapas selection encourages diners to sample a few plates and recommended dishes include Charlie’s Crab Cakes (P175) and the Descojenudos (Quail Eggs on Slice of Toast), Lamb meatballs with Tomato Mint sauce (P170) and Mussels with brandy, cream and tarragon (P185). Those who want heftier meals can take a look at the entree list with items like Charlie’s Crispy Pata 4-4 (P530), Roasted Pork Loin with Bourbon Gravy (P370) and Chicken Quarters Braised slowly with Chardonnay, Leeks, and Carrots (P390).

It’s too early to predict how Charlie’s will fare alongside other more accessible spots in Makati with only two weeks of operation to their name. Co-owner David de Padua also shares, "Jazz artists, a tightly-knit group in Manila, have started to drop by and we’re firming up the weekly band schedule." The live jazz music line-up at Charlie’s will be a mix of standards and contemporary pop from Tuesdays to Saturdays, with jazz artists such as saxophonist Vince Lahorra.
