Twitter, Facebook, Youtube played key role in Willie Revillame’s "downfall," according to GMA News Online analysis

( Social media like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube have played a "key role in mobilizing public opinion" about the "Jan-Jan on Willing Willie" controversy that has resulted in the ad pullout of some of the show’s advertisers and the show’s two-week hiatus, reports GMA News Online.

The report cited the Youtube clip of the March 12 episode that went viral with about 300,000 hits before it was taken down. "Although Revillame and the producers of Willing Willie issued an official apology... it was already too late: public disapproval had already started to snowball online," according to GMA News Online.

There are at least three anti-Revillame Facebook pages according to GMA News Online, as of posting time: "OUST WILLIE REVILLAME ON WOWOWEE! WE HATE HIM!" (182,180 likes), "Anti-Willie Revillame" (20,762 likes), and "Para kay Jan-jan (Shame on you Willie Revillame!)" (12,917 likes). On the other hand, the largest among the groups sympathetic to Revillame, "PRO WILLIE REVILLAME MOVEMENT," has over 4,600 members but many of them are critical of the TV host, according to GMA News Online.

Froilan Grate, the organizer of the "Para kay Jan-jan" page, earlier issued a public petition condemning the Willing Willie incident. It was addressed to the Philippine Association of National Advertisers, among others, which then forwarded the letter to its members. According to GMA News Online, Jollibee Foods Corporation pulled out its Mang Inasal ad placements from the show "as a direct result of Grate’s campaign." Other companies have followed suit.

On Twitter, netizens and celebrities also spoke against the Jan-Jan incident. On Friday, Revillame singled out Tony-winning actress Lea Salonga, singers Jim Paredes, Aiza Seguerra and Leah Navarro, TV host Bianca Gonzalez, actresses Mylene Dizon and Agot Isidro, and comedians Tuesday Vargas and K Brosas as the personalities who supposedly ruined his name on the social media site. Most of the celebrities have Tweeted and blogged their responses to Revillame’s statement.

Meanwhile, Google search results show that online interest in "Willie Revillame" has remained elevated since the March 12 episode, reports GMA News Online.
