Fr. Bernas finds Contraception = Abortion statement by Anti-RH Bill advocates "hilarious"
(SPOT.ph) Jesuit priest and dean emeritus of the Ateneo Law school Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ laughed at the claim made by anti-Reproductive Health (RH) advocates that contraception is murder and deemed it "hilarious," reports ABS-CBN News. As mentioned in previous reports, Bernas supports the pending RH bill.
Bernas’ amusement stemmed from Manila 5th District Rep. Amado Bagatsing statement last month: "Ang contraceptives ay humaharang para huwag magbuntis, huwag magkita ang egg at ang ovum (Contraceptives block pregnancy by preventing the egg and ovum to meet)," he said, adding that stopping them from meeting is tantamount to abortion.
Bernas, amicus curiae of the Supreme Court and who also helped draft the current Constitution, said that the RH Bill revolves around the right to life. He rejected generalizing all contraceptives as abortifacients, adding that only one drug, Postinor, has been identified as such and withdrawn by the Food and Drug Administration from the market.
"(This) charge is made that the RH bill will destroy the Filipino family. On the basis of more than 25 years of pastoral and social work in Payatas, and some seven years sponsoring natural family planning programs, I can say that the family is already at great risk-and not because of contraceptives," explained Bernas, in the report, quoting a sociologist.
