Mike Arroyo now on immigration watch list
(SPOT.ph) The Department of Justice has placed former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo on the Bureau of Immigration's watch list yesterday, August 4, reports GMA News. Arroyo, who is currently in Hong Kong receiving medical treatment, is under fire for his alleged involvement in the Philippine National Police helicopter controversy.
Senators Teofisto Guingona and Jinggoy Estrada requested for Arroyo to be placed on the list to guarantee that he will not leave the country. However, in a text message sent to ABS-CBN News, Arroyo confirmed his intention to return: "Coming back Monday. I want to attend but decision on my health depends on my doctors. Only 5% survive my life threatening operation and of the 5% who survive, 50% will die within the next 5 years. I certainly don't want to be dead," his text message read, referring to an impending Senate probe on the chopper case.
Although the BI has no record of the first gentleman leaving the country, implying that he took a chartered flight, his lawyer, Inocencio Ferrer, insisted Arroyo was not in hiding. He also clarified that Arroyo rode a commercial plane-Cathay Pacific Flight CX918. "He really intends to return to the Philippines to join his family and address the issues as soon as his doctors allow him... Mr. Arroyo is not in hiding and there is no reason for him to do so," he said, adding that Arroyo has not been invited nor been subpoenaed by the Senate.
Arroyo's accountant (executive secretary in some reports), Rowena Del Rosario, is also on the watch list for allegedly being present during the helicopter transactions.
