Pinoy janitor is Oxford scholar, works 20 hours a week to support wife and son while studying
(SPOT.ph) Jeryl Bayona is a Filipino taking up a bachelor's degree in Theology at England’s prestigious Oxford University. To fulfill both his dream and his duties as a husband and father, he sidelines as a janitor and a caretaker. According to ABS-CBN News, he has become a source of inspiration for his fellow Filipino schoolmates.
Born with a visual impairment, Bayona grew up in a farm in South Cotabato, inheriting only good sense and a passion for learning from his parents. He narrated that his local degree from an unaccredited college barred him from being promoted, thus pushing him to pursue better education. "(This proves) na kahit walang-wala ka, kahit physically you have some challenges at imposible sa pagtingin ng iba, but if you have the determination to do it and if you are given a chance and you grabbed it with the full understanding na may magagawa ka, I think you can do it. That's what I have proven," said Bayona.
Analyn Salvador-Amares, a fellow Filipino studying Anthropology in Oxford, said Bayona serves as an inspiration. "Oxford is a tough place. Jeryl's story inspires us to persevere and build confidence to face the pressure of perfection in the academe."
