Aljur Abrenica explains "fight" with Indian tourist at Eastwood
(SPOT.ph) Actor Aljur Abrenica clarified in a PEP.ph article that he did not have a fight with a tourist from India at Eastwood City on August 7. According to the actor, the unfortunate encounter stemmed from a cultural misunderstanding.
Based on Abrenica’s account in PEP.ph: The tourist, who allegedly looked at the actor menacingly, asked Abrenica what his problem was. Abrenica, who was with friends, replied: "There's no problem, everything's cool." But the tourist insisted and told Abrenica: "Why are you staring at my eyes?" Abrenica said that the tourist began to raise his voice, causing people around them to stare. "Ang daming nakatingin sa amin, hanggang sa hinawakan niya ako sa balikat, tinanong ako anong problema (People were looking at us and then he grabbed my shoulder and asked me what my problem was)," he recalled.
According to Abrenica, the tourist’s companions stopped him from inflicting further physical harm. Abrenica’s friends, however, reported the incident to the mall's security. After a mediated confrontation between the two parties, everything was eventually ironed out. Abrenica said that the tourist apologized and explained that it was impolite in India to look someone straight in the eye-a gesture considered proper etiquette in the Philippines.
