Miss Universe Leila Lopes accused of faking documents to join Miss Angola UK pageant; slammed by Miss France and fans of Miss Philippines

ABC News and International Business Times (IBT) report that Argentinian newspaper Infobae published a report alleging that reigning Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola was allowed to participate in the Miss Angola UK competition.

Does Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola now feel the burden of the crown?

They say one can never be too rich or too beautiful. But, perhaps, one can be too controversial?

ABC News and International Business Times (IBT) report that Argentinian newspaper Infobae published a report alleging that reigning Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes of Angola was allowed to participate in the Miss Angola UK competition.

Miss Angola UK is for Angolan citizens living in the UK. The Infobae report claimed that Lopes has never lived outside Angola. (Note: The ABC News report doesn’t cite the specific pageant name, only referring to it as "a Miss Angola competition." IBT, on the other hand, specifically identifies it as "Miss Angola UK.")

Both the ABC News and IBT report cited a man named Charles Mukano who claimed that he helped falsify documents identifying Lopes as a student of business management at a British school, enabling her to enter and win in the Miss Angola UK pageant. Infobae likewise said that reports in Angolan media allege that Mukano may have even bribed judges in England to ensure Lopes' win.

Lopes indeed won the Miss Angola UK title on October 8, 2010, but her victory was met with protests "due to the fact that she was not a UK resident."

In any case, Lopes went on to join and win the Miss Angola title in the Miss Angola pageant held in Luanda on December 18, 2010. Winning that particular title gave her the right to represent Angola in this year’s Miss Universe pageant. She was crowned as Miss Universe 2011 just last week.

ABC News noted: "Lopes was the first Miss Universe from her country, but came under attack in the following days by Miss France (Laury Thilleman) and fans of Miss Phillipines (Shamcey Supsup) as undeserving of the crown."
