GMA News Online-citing stories posted by the The Rapid City Journal and Fox News-reports that the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) now owns the nearly abandoned town of Scenic, South Dakota, for $700,000 or roughly P30,000,000.

In its September 26 report, The Rapid City Journal, a South Dakota newspaper, culled records from Pennington County showing that INC has bought "59 parcels of land in Scenic." "The church hasn't said anything about its plans for the property, and calls seeking comment from church offices were not returned," The Rapid City Journal said on its website.

Meanwhile, a CNBC report identified the town’s previous owner as Twila Merrill, 74, a "rodeo legend" whose health began to fail about two years ago when she was stricken with cancer. Her original asking price for the town was $3 million price tag. However, in July, she lowered the selling price to $799,000, or roughly 41 cents per square foot.

GMA News Online had called INC’s Central Temple in Quezon City yesterday, October 9. According to INC minister Bien Santiago, INC has not released a statement on the matter.
