( It started with a hunch. In December 2010, 22-year-old owner Kristia Bulan predicted that tea was going to be a hit. One year later and clairvoyance aside, she was right. But late into the game, Bulan knew she had to stand out. "I needed to be unique," she said. "If this were a fad, I’d want to be one of the last ones standing." With this premise in mind, Raintree Teaspresso Blends was born-a product of nine months' research that included jetting over to Taiwan to sample nearly 100 varieties of tea.

Located at the far end of Katipunan Avenue, Raintree looks far from the usual order-and-go tea places in the city. For one, it has ample parking space. Inside, a row of black stools line one side while the rest of the space is a medley of small round tables, wooden seats, and soft plum club chairs. Jars of tea leaves (Thai Cha Yen, Irish Earl Gray, Moroccan Mint, Sencha Kyoto, among others) sit on a shelf in a corner. Beside it is a flirtatious glass display of Banana Walnut Choco Chip and Carrot Walnut muffins. One wall serves as a constant reminder to why you're there: "Next to water, tea is the most popular beverage in the world. Drinking three or more cups of tea a day is as good for you as water, plus you get its extra health benefits. Besides its detox quality, more and more research now suggests that it also decreases risk for cancer as well as heart disease."

The lavish menu is divided into six categories: Pearl Tea Float, a play on ice cream floats; Dessert Blend, drinks based on desserts; Smootea, smoothies with a tea twist; Pearl Milk Tea, Fruit Tea Infusion, and Hot Blends. Each blend is freshly brewed and spiked with a "tea shot" a la espresso, hence the term "teaspresso." To the potential customer, Bulan recommends bright Raintree Specialtea (made with Cha Yen) with smooth egg pudding or sweet Crème Brulee milk tea with coffee jelly for a hint of roasted flavor. Fruit teas, she suggested, pair well with tangy Popping Bobba. Raintree is also riding the Christmas bandwagon by releasing a holiday line of drinks like Gingerbread Milk Tea, Pecan Pie Dessert Blend, and Berry Christmas Milk Tea.
